 • The Solar Ultraviolet Imager (SUVI) successfully completed its pre-shipment review on December 12, 2013 at the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, California. The instrument is now ready for integration onto the GOES-R spacecraft.
The 3rd NOAA Satellite Science Week Virtual Meeting, GOES-R and JPSS Programs, will be held March 10-14, 2014.
The Space Environment In-Situ Suite (SEISS) was completed and cleared for integration onto the GOES-R spacecraft.

Kudos to GOES-R Research Scientist Dr. Jessica Cherry on being selected as one of six commercial astronaut candidates by Astronauts for Hire (A4H)!  A4H is a non-profit corporation that trains and prepares flight members to become Research Specialist and Operations Specialist Astronauts for future commercial spaceflight research mission opportunities. Jessica was also among the final 100 for the NASA Astronaut Class of 2013.

Jessica is a Research Associate Professor at the International Arctic Research Center and the Institute of Northern Engineering at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). In her role at UAF, she contributes to GOES-R Proving Ground through her snow product and hydrologic science research at the Cooperative Institute For Alaska Research (CIFAR).

The GOES Rebroadcast (GRB) Simulator successfully finished long-term Product Acceptance Testing (PAT) on May 26 with no discrepancies. The GRB Simulator Delivery Test Review occurred May 28, and the GRB Simulators shipped on May 29. NOAA/NESDIS is planning an industry day in August to commence the check-out of the simulators to industry.
The Space Environment In-situ Suite (SEISS) Suite Pre-Environmental Review (PER) was successfully held May 1-3, 2013 in Carlisle, MA.


The GOES-R Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) Validation Science Team has been awarded a NASA Group Achievement Award (GAA) in recognition of the CHUVA Lightning Mapping Array experiment in Brazil. The award will be presented to the team on July 25, 2013 in a ceremony at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL.

The team was honored for providing an exemplary contribution to the combined NASA and NOAA mission to develop the next generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-R (GOES-R). The team members, participating in a complex international field campaign, successfully deployed, operated and maintained within cost and schedule the São Paulo Lightning Mapping Array (SPLMA) as a world class scientific and operational total lightning observing network. This accomplishment reflected the careful planning, dedicated teamwork, outstanding execution, and unselfish collaboration exhibited by the team. The unique and valuable lightning observations resulting from this team’s effort make an important contribution to the intensive and focused work now underway to develop, test, and validate the GOES-R instrument algorithms and products. Through this process, experience will be gained and the products verified and refined so that they will be ready for immediate use following GOES-R launch.

The GLM CHUVA Campaign had international participation by US (NASA, NOAA, university, industry), Brazil (Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais, Brazil (InPE) and University of Sao Paulo], and European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) in preparing for the next generation geostationary lightning mappers on the GOES-R and EUMETSAT Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellites. The first results from the experiment will be presented at the CHUVA Science Workshop May 8-10, 2013 in Sao Paulo hosted by InPE and the University of Sao Paulo.


The Extreme Ultraviolet and X-ray Irradiance Sensor (EXIS) Flight Model 1 (FM1) completed its Pre-Shipment Review (PSR) on April 17. EXIS is the first GOES-R instrument ready to be integrated onto the GOES-R spacecraft. The instrument is currently in storage at the University of Colorado’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics, which built and tested EXIS.


This extension of the COMET module "GOES-R: Benefits of Next Generation Environmental Monitoring" focuses on the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument, the satellite's 16-channel imager. The module introduces the ABI's key features and improvements over earlier GOES imagers and lets users interactively explore the ABI's 16 channels. It also contains movies that show the advancements that the ABI will bring to a variety of applications and contains additional resources pertaining to the ABI.  View the ABI Module
The PBS series NOVA aired a special segment on earth-observing satellites on February 13, 2013. This 2-hour special, “Earth From Space,” highlights how data from NASA, NOAA, and other satellites are transforming the way we understand and view our dynamic planet. Produced in extensive consultation with NASA scientists, NOVA takes data from earth-observing satellites and transforms it into dazzling visual sequences, each one exposing the intricate and surprising web of forces that sustains life on earth. Viewers witness how dust blown from the Sahara fertilizes the Amazon; how a vast submarine "waterfall" off Antarctica helps drive ocean currents around the world; and how the Sun's heating up of the southern Atlantic gives birth to a colossally powerful hurricane. From the microscopic world of water molecules vaporizing over the ocean to the magnetic field that is bigger than Earth itself, the show reveals the astonishing beauty and complexity of our dynamic planet.
